How to Spot Counterfeit Automation Parts and Protect Your Plant
Fake PLCs, drives and breakers cause unplanned downtime and safety risks. These warning signs and buying habits will help you avoid them.
Counterfeit and refurbished-as-new parts are a growing problem in industrial supply. A fake part can work for weeks and then fail without warning, take other equipment with it, or void your warranty and insurance. Spotting them early is cheaper than any repair.
Warning signs when the part arrives
Compare the part against the manufacturer's own product page and photos.
- Printing and logos look blurry, uneven or misaligned.
- The part number or serial number is missing, scratched, or does not verify on the manufacturer's website.
- Packaging is plain, reused, or has spelling mistakes and inconsistent labels.
- The plastics feel light or brittle, and the screws and terminals are poor quality.
- Firmware versions or date codes do not match the claimed model.
Warning signs in the offer
- The price is far below the usual market price for the same part.
- The seller cannot give an invoice, a warranty or a clear return policy.
- The part is described as "new surplus" or "compatible" without naming a source.
- The seller will not confirm the brand's distributor channel.
How to protect yourself
- Buy from suppliers who work with the manufacturer or its authorised distributors, and ask for the supply chain.
- Keep invoices, datasheets and delivery notes with the equipment record.
- Verify serial numbers with the manufacturer where a check tool exists.
- Test critical spare parts on receipt, before they go into stock or into a live panel.
- For safety-critical parts such as breakers, relays and emergency stop devices, never compromise on source.
Why it matters
A counterfeit breaker may not trip on a fault. A fake drive may overheat. A cloned PLC may have unknown firmware. The cost of the part is small compared with the cost of an incident or a stopped line.
At Nexa Automation we supply genuine parts from the brands we carry, with documentation. If you are unsure about a part you have already bought, send us the details and we will help you check it.
